Ascent Children's Book Prize is now open for entries and we are thrilled to introduce our judge, Hannah Sheppard:

I started my career in-house in the editorial department, first at Macmillan Children’s Books and then running the YA list at Headline (part of Hachette). This gives me valuable insight into the workings of a publishing house which helps inform my work as an agent.

In 2013 I switched from editorial to agenting when I realised that would give me more time to focus on the parts of the job that I really love – working directly with authors to develop their ideas for commercial success.

After ten years at the DHH Literary Agency I decided to launch the Hannah Sheppard Literary Agency with the aim of being part of the change publishing so desperately needs.

I love stories and I want to make sure that as many fantastic stories from as diverse a range of authors as possible end up on our bookshop shelves. I want to be entertained while also deeply caring about your characters. I love bold, distinctive voices, strong and unique hooks and flawed characters with something to learn. I’m looking for joyful representation and books that show us what a kinder, more just world might look like so that we can show each other what to work towards. I also like big, mind-bending ideas and combinations of genres that feel fresh and create something new.

The best advice I can give to authors at the beginning of their career is that it’s a marathon not a sprint and to keep putting your work out there because it only takes one yes but if you’re avoiding the no then you’ll never find the yes. Keep writing and write the book that only you could write because your voice and your story matters.

1. Plan before I write. The night before each writing session I am going to spend some time thinking about who my characters are and what they want. Doing this before I go to sleep will ensure my subconscious gets to work on it.

2. Set realistic goals linked to time. This will be a mixture of long and short sessions. I will track my word count and give myself rewards for each 500 words. Who doesn’t like a biscuit with their cup of tea?

3. Channel the philosophy of Natalie Goldberg from her book ‘Writing Down the Bones’ where writing is a process not a product. We should return to the page without judgement or fear. She suggests: not crossing out, keeping your hand moving, focus on flow and not being correct and to trust your instincts.

4. Eliminate distractions. There’s so many of these but I shall be starting with my phone. When I write, it cannot be in the same room.

5. Share your goals for accountability. For the next week I shall be sending my daily word count to my writing friends. There’s no need for them to comment. But the act reminds me of what I’ve set out to achieve.

1. Find your writing tribe.

Writing is hard and without my support network I would’ve given up many times. Whether it be a trusted friend, or someone you’ve connected with on social media, other writers understand this business like no one else. Find your people and cherish them. They’re going to be there for you when you fail or when the doubt kicks in, and they’ll also be ready to celebrate when things go your way.

2. Read like a writer. Deconstruct opening pages. Why are they good? What hooks does the writer use? Look at the balance of dialogue and interiority. Highlight your favourite passages and return to them again and again.

3. The muse likes to take long holidays. Show up anyway. Get your bum in the chair and keep writing. Water does not flow until the tap is turned on! It is your consistency that will win in the end.

4. Your first novel may not be the one. This can be a hard lesson to learn but after years of work, some books may not make it. There are authors out there who were writing their fifth or tenth novel (hello Brandon Sanderson) before they were published.

5. Use writing competitions as a way to hone your craft and use the deadline to push your manuscript to its next stage. Without a deadline, our writing can slow and nothing works better than a ticking clock (in fiction and real life!)

6. Writing is a craft that can be taught. Read all the books. Listen to advice. Do courses if you think they’re good value and affordable. Then decide what works for you. Never stop learning but accept that the only rules that work, are those that work for you.

7. Separate the business of writing from the art. When you want to publish your book, it becomes all about its potential to make a long line of people money, from the publishing house to independent bookstores. This is not about treating your story with all the love it deserves but about a commercial enterprise. A shift in perspective is needed and a thick skin.
